Those fortunate to have attended one of Levon Helm’s legendary Midnight Rambles are in on a secret that’s in the process of becoming common knowledge to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Alexis P Suter Band has had the honor of opening the show at the acclaimed Levon Helm Midnight Ramble Sessions in Woodstock, NY over 90 times. As was the case in those incendiary performances, the Alexis P Suter Band sound revolves around the powerhouse voice and presence of Alexis P Suter; but the story doesn’t end there. Driving outstanding material, steeped in Blues while fused with memorable hooks, is the outstanding musicianship of the Alexis P Suter Band. When Alexis steps away from the mic you can’t help but be drawn in by this tight soul rocking ensemble; be it Ray Grappone’s second line drumming teaming with Peter Bennett’s rock steady bass lines holding down the bottom, Jimmy Bennett’s slide forays evoking memories of Duane Allman, or soulful singer Vicki Bell ramping up the intensity. Suffice to say, they’re considered by their peers as one of the best live bands on the scene today!
As with all great Blues and R&B performances, the APSB is best experienced in a live setting, but that’s not to discount the band’s proficiency in the studio. More than a few hearts have been moved by the deep rooted passion displayed by the collective over the course of their 6 releases to date. And none better than 2014’s Love The Way You Roll that debuted on The Living Blues Charts at # 22 and stayed atop the Roots Music Reports Blues / Rock charts for an incredible 16 weeks.
“Roll” may be the band’s finest effort in combining their unique mix of Gospel tinged Blues with all-out Rock excursions. A prime example of the former is “Anything” that finds Alexis working an Otis Redding type groove, wringing every emotion out of each line, slowly and deliberately. The latter can be found on Slim Harpo’s “Shake Your Hips”, long part of the band’s live repertoire, and committed to disc for the first time. It’s an all-out Boogie that’s just plain fun.
Alexis was nominated for a 2012 Blues Music Award for “Best Soul Blues Female Artist” and is now nominated for the Koko Taylor Blues Music Award. Catch her and the firepower of the exciting Alexis P Suter Band at Violet’s and find out why.
